We have all thought at one time or another that we missed it – missed our shot, our calling, God’s timing, His will. Maybe you spent a bunch of time on something, only to have it fall apart, or there doesn’t seem to be a grand passion that has presented itself as your purpose in life. So, here is the secret. Stop trying to picture it. In reality, it’s not your dream. It’s God’s dream. And it’s wild.
Because it is God’s dream we are desiring to fulfill, we run the risk of idolatry when we try to fashion it as our own. Do not be loyal to the image in your mind but be humble enough to accept that your picture is likely not how God has designed your destiny. Okay, let’s say never. It’s almost never what you picture. I can almost arrogantly promise you that it won’t involve who you think it will, when you think it will happen, or how you figure it might.
Because He’s so awesome, He gives us the ability and desire to live out His dream; to share in the excitement and glory, the challenge of the road, the pride in the accomplishment. But ultimately, it’s His ride, and you just get to go along and share the reward. Like any good Father, He drives the car, and you don’t always arrive at your destination before you get serious antsy-pants, or despair that the trip is taking too long, or wonder if you might have gotten lost.
If you can picture God as the driver, then disappointment is a delusion, an unmet expectation from your concept of the journey, a fog that gets in your way. A vapor. Wave it off. Turn your headlights on and realize the sun will soon burn it off. Our God who never slumbers, will drive through the night of your fears, and will never pull over the car and threaten to take you home if you don’t straighten up. There may be a potty break to stretch your legs and get a Dr. Pepper, but it doesn’t mean that you are incapable of continuing the journey, or that He is no longer interested in its completion.
Be warned, however, that this journey is not a foregone conclusion. You are not a captive in the car. God loves your free will too much to dictate how you travel. Many have refused the ride in favor of walking or taken a detour to see the World’s Largest Ball of String but God will never drive off while you are in the bathroom. His car is always warmed up and waiting for you to step inside, no matter how long you wait to get in. Because He loves you and created you for this specific journey, He has no desire to chastise you with yanking the dream out from under you and giving it to someone else. In fact, there is no one competing for your seat in the car. It’s your seat, and always has been. The seat you were created to occupy. On the journey that is all yours, with a loving Father who knows the way, and desires nothing more than to share it with you.
If you are at sea with your dream, your role, your timing, realize that the structure and practicality of the journey happens after the acceptance that it can only be accomplished by faith and God’s authority. Don’t be fooled if it looks inadequate or weird at first or doesn’t make you deliriously happy. Stay focused. You are going to become what you are doing. Worry only about this moment; that you are obedient in the details, and asking God daily for His will – and His wildest dream – to be done.
Then buckle your seatbelt.
“I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.” Isaiah 42:16 (NIV)
