I grew up on Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman in the 70’s. She was smart and beautiful, kind and powerful. I was a fan.
When I heard about the new movie coming out this summer, I got a little obsessed.
I began to wonder about Wonder Woman. I discovered she was the Honorary UN Ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls, raising awareness of Sustainable Development Goal Number 5 which seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by 2030. (Winnie the Pooh and Red from Angry Birds have also served as UN Ambassadors.) FYI, Wonder Woman is no longer serving in this role. There was a bit of an uproar and numerous protests about how she did not represent those women and girls who most need equality and empowerment.
I wish the detractors would have encountered this image (below) that rolled into my Facebook news feed. It was created by Sarah & Catherine Saturn, Chicago artists & twins. Women of all variations are Wonder – Full! But it’s so much more than appearances – it’s about who they are, who we are, on the inside.
I couldn’t wait for the movie to come out and went to see it last week. And then I went to see it again! Yep. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie in the theater more than once. And when I say I’m available tonight if you’d like to go see it – I really mean it! There are so many truth bombs for us girls. Here are just a few:
Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t seen the movie – go see it now. Then come back and read my post
- You are Stronger than You Know
Diana’s mentor, Antiope pushed her to the limits. She told her, “You are stronger than you believe. You have greater powers than you know.” I love the idea of women calling other women to be all they can be. We don’t discover our strength without a nudge. Some of us need a kick in the butt.
- The Battle is not Fair
Antiope challenged Diana to remain focused. “You expect the battle to be fair. The battle will not be fair.” Oh man, isn’t that the truth? The enemy understands our weaknesses and exploits our vulnerabilities. Life is not fair. Whether you feel like you are in a battle or not, you have to stay alert and on guard.
- There is Always Time for Compassion
When Diana and the team are passing through no man’s land, she hears the plight of people in a nearby village who are enslaved by the enemy. The team insists there is no time to stop and they must continue on their journey, but Diana cannot just walk on by. She is moved with compassion to rise up with courage in the face of injustice. It is one of the most powerful scenes in the movie.
- You Discover Your Identity in the Doing
Diana knew who she was. She introduced herself as Diana, Princess of Themyscira, Daughter of Hippolyta – Queen of the Amazons. She had a good grip on her identity. She also knew her mission as an Amazon was to defeat Ares, the god of war. Her mother tried to stop her from heading out to attempt this mission, telling her she didn’t understand the whole picture. Diana responded, “I understand enough.” Oh man, It gives me goosebumps all over again remembering that line. She was compelled to go! It’s true that she didn’t have the whole picture, but she moved forward in what she did know about who she was and the little she understood about her purpose in the world. And here is the most amazing part! It wasn’t until she got up and went to war that she discovered the truth of her divine identity. She was the daughter of a god, both human and divine, with powers she could have never imagined. What an incredible lesson for every woman. We only discover who we are and what we are capable of after we rise up and begin to do what we can with what we know. And we often discover the depths of who we are in the battle itself.
That is my ultimate take away from Wonder Woman. Get up and move forward with what you know right now. Don’t wait until you have complete clarity. Purpose is revealed in the pursuit. You discover who you are in the doing.
