Be Bossy

Be Bossy

There’s a quote on my vision board that I’ve been saying to myself lately: Be the boss of your body. I remind myself of this quote when I’m craving something I know won’t nourish my mind, body, or soul. It sometimes applies to junk food that will make me feel awful after eating it, or the movie with the dark undertone that could potentially pull my heart down into anger or trigger depression, but “everyone’s” talking about it. It can even apply to the relationships you build.  Is what I desire life-giving or, or life-compromising?

Almost everything we see is geared toward doing what makes us feel happy, look sexy, or feign importance. It’s all geared to appeal to what our flesh wants and prompts us to satiate our desires, not necessarily meet our needs. Romans 12:2 says, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” Anytime we change who we are or how we look based on culture, it shrouds unique aspects of our identities, and our body, mind, and soul pays the price. Insecurity begins to taunt us if we fall behind on trends, and comparison becomes a barometer of self-worth.

As we learn to listen and respond to what our bodies need as opposed to what we’re told we should want, we begin to step into who we are truly created to be in a very healthy way.  When we make changes based on what is best for our mental and physical health, and surround ourselves with people who remind us that individuality is a blessing, our entire body flourishes. We become mirrors of strength, wisdom, and love when we decide to take control of negative habits or cravings, and our process encourages our sisters to do the same.

So, before you say yes to the newest “must-try, must-have,” ask yourself why it appeals to you. Does it support positive growth in your short and long-term goals? Does it play on insecurities, and this new thing is the solution? Will it help you build a legacy of walking in wisdom? Changing our mindset takes time, patience, and intentionality. Every moment we choose to go against the trend, God blesses us with more revelation that we were made unique, on purpose, and for a purpose. God created you to be YOU, and when you are just that it encourages all of us to come out of hiding behind culture and shine brightly in our world.

Reflection

  1. How can you decide if a new trend is a healthy choice for you?

  2. What small step can you take towards developing a more positive self-image?

  3. What phrase or bible verse can quote to yourself when you need encouragement to overcome a negative desire?

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”

(Romans 12:2 NLT)
