Confessions of a Closet Diabetic

I wanted to cry, but I didn’t. I knew what the doctor was going to say before he even entered the office with his clipboard and stethoscope. As I sat on the cold, sterile bench I thought about my past. The bad choices. The impulsive binge eating. The regret.

Y’all, let me just be real honest. I’m a diabetic with a serious sweet tooth and an addiction to food that runs deep within my soul - and this undercover diabetic doesn’t want to be judged by my poor choices. I want to eat my Blue-Bell and my second helping of mashed taters without condemnation from others.

However, three months prior to this dreaded doctor’s visit I finally decided to make a change – a real change. I started exercising and eating healthier. I really worked hard at it. Regardless, years of bad dietary choices, surrendering to my sweet tooth, and succumbing to the idea that everything in my life had to be celebrated with food led me here. As much as I wanted it to, three months of living healthier couldn’t make a big enough dent in my A1C to forgo the inevitable shots that I would now administer to myself in order to control my diabetes.

The bottom line is, if I want to be fully used by God I have to take care of myself. I can’t go for God if I can’t go. God’s depending on us to take care of ourselves so that we can take care of His business. Everyone battles different temptations. Mine is food. With God, we can overcome these temptations. Just like 1 Corinthians 6:19 states our bodies really are temples. Our souls and our health were bought with a precious price. They are holy, restored by God and we need to try our best to keep them that way.

The struggle is real, but so is God.

Dear Created Woman, take care of yourself. Decide today to say no to whatever it is that is harming you physically and mentally. God needs you.

Reflection

1.     What is your biggest health struggle?

2.     How can your relationship with God help you overcome the above struggle?

3.     Where are you in the CW process of fulfilling God's purpose for your life? (Dreams, Healing, Identity, Health, Purpose, Fashion)

IDo you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own: you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.  (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV)
