Virgin River vs. Lazy River

How this River Affected My Purpose

It was the beginning of the summer, and I needed a couple of weekends of down time. The previous weeks had been hectic with work, crazy schedules, end of the school year events, and High School graduation  parties one after another.  I was exhausted physically and emotionally. Honestly, I just wanted a Saturday with mindless activites and just “veg out.” Naturally, I turned to Netflix for the perfect binge show.  After many recommendations, I chose Virgin River.

I instantly fell in love with the show and could not get enough. Lucky for me, there were  three seasons, which gave me plenty to binge on for a day. Before I knew it, the one or two days I needed to veg turned into several more, and Virgin River began to equal Lazy River.  I had become not only physically lazy, but more importantly, mentally and spiritually lazy.

Fast forward to a month later. As I sat one morning  reading my Bible, I just felt blah. I wondered why I felt dry without passion for my calling and purpose in Christ.  As I begin to pray and reflect, I realized how much my time  wasted on mindless activities had kept me from focusing on Christ.  It had become a slow fade.

1 Peter 5:8 says,  “Keep a cool head, stay alert. The devil is poised to pounce and would like nothing more than to catch you napping.”   You see, the enemy is waiting to catch us off guard when we are not paying attention.   He likes it when we are distracted with our hearts and minds far from God’s Word and the work He has called us to do.   If we are not on guard, these subtle, mindless, or even good distractions  can eventually consume our time that is meant to be spent seeking more of Him.  When we are not seeking Him with our all heart, soul and mind, we can miss the work He has called us to do. We become lazy.

Now, let me transparent.  Am I done with Virgin River? Um, no.  There is a new season that will be released next summer (in case you have not received that news yet) that I plan to watch.  However, I am aware of the guardrails I will have to set with my time. The enemy will not catch me “napping” so long that I am distracted from the will of God.

1.      What activities or behaviors  slip into your time that may turn your focus from the things of God?

2.      Have these activities begun to captivate your heart and mind?

3.      How can you begin to set guardrails on those behaviors, to free your mind  to seek more of what He has for your life?

Keep a cool head, stay alert.  The devil is poised to pounce and would like nothing more than to catch you napping.
