Are You Doing These 2 Things to Hear From the Lord?

It is my nature to be a "Martha" as in the Bible story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10. I can stay busy and find worth in how much I can accomplish.

However, I have learned over and over that I have to give up how I think it must be done to discover God's plan for me. Justlike we learn about our best friend, spouse, or children by spending time with them and listening to them, we must do the same with the Lord to know Him and His plans.

As the story goes, it seems that Mary and Martha were both spending time with Jesus, but look closer as to who was actually listening to him?

Luke 10:38-41 (NIV)

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

Recently, two simple words from this passage jumped off the page at me - two words that can make a difference in knowing and hearing from the Lord.

Mary satat the feet of Jesus and listened. Mary had a hunger to learn the ways of Jesus and was willing to be still to know Him.

Can you pause with me for a moment and ask, when was the last time I "sat" to do nothing more than study God's word?  When was the last time I sat (not including driving) to spend time in prayer and worship of the almighty Father?

When we make Him a priority by sitting with our undivided attention, we learn to know Him.

I have to be honest, Martha's distraction cracks me up a little because I can so relate.  She was allowing all of her preparation and concern for what Mary was not doing, keep her from knowing the real deal with Jesus.

If I am not mindful, today's world of distractions can keep me from missing out. It is easy to:

·      stay busy and miss out on what the Lord has to say to me

·      concern myself with others thatshould not be my concern

·      allow my phone, computer, to do list come first before time with Him

So here is the question: How things might things be different for you if:

·      you took time each day to sit with the Lord in prayer and studying of His word?

·      turned off the distractions of social media, text messages, email and worries to spend time with Him?

Jesus had the answer for Martha in verse 42.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.

It is when we take TIME to do these two things to hear from the Lord, He shows a way that is better, and things that "will not be taken away."
