What's the Hottest Diet and Does it Work?

In a recent episode of 20/20, Losing the Big Fat Trap, several fad diets were highlighted including the most recent and ludicrous of all:  The Tube in Your Nose Diet. The show started by examining several celebrity diets that we all have read about or seen. What was the most interesting to me were the big bucks these celebs were being paid to lose weight as a spokesperson for a particular diet program.  What a motivation!  I think we could all stick to a diet long-term if were being paid big bucks.

The truth is all of these fad diets work “temporarily,” but most of them can’t be done long term.  Aren’t we, as women, tired of the back and forth dieting? I don’t know about you, but I am too busy to follow a restricted food plan and keep up with all of the diet trends.

For just a minute, can you stop wondering if the latest diet will work for you?  Can you throw out the hope that “this diet” is the answer for your quick weight loss?  Let’s focus on what really matters with our body and eating.

 Control and Confidence

In working with many women to create a fitness and food design for their lifestyle, I have learned that most women are tired of letting their weight and food control their mind.  Many women feel it keeps them from focusing on what really matters in life.  They have missed out on opportunities with friends and family because of the lack of confidence in their body. They do not want to be imprisoned to a “diet.” What they want is to have control and confidence in what they are eating.

 Peace and Contentment

Can we really be at peace struggling to keep up with celebrity bodies or the latest diet?  When asked if a diet works, my response is, “Can you do it for the rest of your life?”  “If not, it will not work?” True joy comes when we are at peace with food and content with our body, a body that is a living example of health, not perfection.

As a busy woman do you have time to try and live by these restricted diets?  To lose and maintain your weight, a Clear Design for your lifestyle is what is needed to stop the yoyo dieting.

If you are ready to gain control and finally be at peace by knowing how to really eat healthy, including the foods you love, I would love to help you.  Contact me for a consultation at crystal@yourfitnessdesigner.com and simply add consultation to the email subject line.

Did you say, "Green Cosmetics?"

In today's American society, to be "green" doesn't refer to green with envy but rather sensitive to the earth we . Is the product manufactured in an ethical way? Is recycling a part of the process? Is it friendly to the environment? In investigating beauty products  that fit the bill, I discovered brands whose mission and purpose earned them recognition by Certified Green Cosmetics.

Origins

Our mission is to create high performance natural skincare that is powered by nature, proven by science.

Burt's Bees

This company started out selling their renowned lip palm  at craft fairs and they've come a long way Baby! Their line now includes products for men, babies, skin, face, body, hair AND products for the outdoors.

Aside from a great quality product, here's what I love:

We believe in giving back.Through The Greater Good Foundation, we commit to pledge at least 10% of all Web Site sale revenues to our selected "well being" partners.

                                                                                   JASON

In 1959 when other companies were including man made perfume and petroleum in their products, a group of Californians moved towards a more natural approach with Apricot Oil, Peppermint Oil and Wheat Protein. In addition to face, body, hair and sun products these guys have a entire Oral lineup of toothpaste and mouthwash that  do not include chemicals and are safe for people and the environment.

  Mary Kay Cosmetics

While Mary Kay Cosmetics doesn't carry the "green seal" their newest product is called  Botanical Effects Skin Care and the products do not include synthetic dyes or added fragrance. All of their products have a 100% buy back guarantee.

Each of theses companies reaches out to a wide range of clients and they include products for dry, normal and oily skin. Focused on providing  people a quality product, it appears that each of these organizations has a reputation of  putting their clients needs out in front, and if you're not already 'brand loyal' you might want to give one of these companies a try.

Invitation

Romans 4:19-25

Abraham didn't focus on his own impotence and say, "It's hopeless. This hundred-year-old body could never father a child." Nor did he survey Sarah's decades of infertility and give up. He didn't tiptoe around God's promise asking cautiously skeptical questions. He plunged into the promise and came up strong, ready for God, sure that God would make good on what he had said. That's why it is said, "Abraham was declared fit before God by trusting God to set him right." But it's not just Abraham; it's also us! The same thing gets said about us when we embrace and believe the One who brought Jesus to life when the conditions were equally hopeless. The sacrificed Jesus made us fit for God, set us right with God.

On the Saturday before Easter I find myself not looking back at the cross of Good Friday but, my thoughts are pulled forward to the celebration of the empty tomb that waits on Sunday morning. Yes, the cross is where His precious blood flowed and, I was made right in His death. “It is finished.” The cross on Friday sets my mind at ease that my debt is paid. However it is the emptiness of the tomb that inspires me to believe for more than simply being in the clear. It dares me to believe for the impossible.

Jesus paid this price and, that seems a waist to me if I only spend my life looking at all I have done and will do wrong. Especially if I focus only on how much I need His redeeming love every day but, never look forward to go after what God's inviting me to do with the new life. This requires that I take my eyes off of my sin and all it cost. In order to look, with a grateful heart, to a living God for what He's saying is possible. This invitation is to a life lived not in fear of sin but, rather with excitement. About a life with a God who has a plan for me. Who wants me to be in His story and, it’s far bigger than what I could've ever imagined for myself. What I would have called myself unqualified for or, would say that my sin had disqualified me to do. God calls me overqualified for because of Jesus.

Do you allow yourself to dream big?

Have you ever asked God what His dreams for your life are?

Jesus, Thank you for the cross .

Thank you God for the empty tomb.

Holy Spirit, open our eyes to what both of these mean.

Amen

Trend or Classic: What do you Believe?

It is spring and time to look around for the latest trend in fashion for our wardrobe.  Like most women, I want to stay abreast of the latest trend in fashion.  However, there have been times over the years, that I went for the latest trend, and it proved not to be suited  for me, even though it was in style.  For example, when I was a teenager in the 60’s, the mini skirt hit the fashion market.  While Andre Courreges gets the credit for inventing the mini skirt,  it was Mary Quant who started producing short mini dresses and skirts that were set 6-7 inches above the knee.  Women could now expose as much of her legs as her body shape permitted.  I loved the mini skirt, but, unfortunately, I was endowed with wide hips and round legs.  I quickly came to the conclusion that the mini skirt definitely didn’t serve me well.  It was then that I made the decision to just stick with the classics.

I believe that is the way it is in our spiritual life.  We are faced with trends in the church world that may or may not serve us well.  I am particularly referring to the onslaught of modern technology that is booming in the church.  Do these sound familiar?

Live Stream

Ipad

Websites/Blogging Facebook/Twitter/Texting

All of these have allowed the gospel to be spread in more ways than I could have ever imagined.  I must confess that being part of the ‘older generation’, I sometimes have to sit back and ask myself the question, “How is that working for me”?  Must I throw myself into this trend, or stick to my old ways of communicating to receive spiritual enlightenment?

The Bible says you can’t put new wine into old wineskins.  That scripture has always been my philosophy when making changes in my life. So, as the world and culture is constantly changing around me, I want to always be open to putting new wine in this old wineskin.  Therefore, I have concluded for my own self that I will become a part of this church trend, and go with it.

However, I want to make sure that there are some classics in my spiritual closet that must remain as I venture into this trend.  To name a few of those classics:

  1. Forsake not the assembling of yourself together -- As long as I am able to walk into the doors of a church building, Live Stream won’t ever take the place of my assembling together with other believers, shaking their hands, looking them in the face, and giving them a hug on Sunday morning.  And may I also add:  “May I never allow Live Stream to keep me from brushing my teeth, getting out of my PJS, and getting dressed for church when I have an able body to get me there.
  2. The Family Bible -- I just have to believe that it  is valuable for my grandchildren to see Nana reading from an open Bible when they visit me, and not some mechanical devise I hold in my hands.  There is something about flipping the pages of that sacred book, and pointing out to my grandchildren pictures of David, Jonah, and yes, Our Lord, that will make a lasting impression on them.
  3. Websites/Blogging -- One of the highlights of my life has been the privilege of blogging on Created Woman.  I have always loved to write, and I never imagined that I would been given an opportunity to pour my heart out to people all over the globe. However, may I never forget the elderly who do not have internet service or those in the nursing homes who would enjoy a written card to brighten their day.
  4. Facebook, Twitter, Texting -- Oh, how I do love Facebook and texting!  They have, not only afforded me the opportunity to connect with friends and family, but has given me the opportunity to quote a scripture or type a special thought to brighten my friends’ day on the spur of the moment.  But, may I never forget that what they may need for me to do sometimes is to meet with them face to face and give them the time to pour out their heart to me.  No devise can take the place of a human voice, a listening ear, and a soft touch made by human hands.

I could go on and on with a long list of spiritual classics that I am trying to keep in my spiritual closet in the midst of the current trend of modern day technology.  It is up to each individual as to what trend or classic they believe best suited for their own spiritual closet?

Trend or Classic: What do you believe ?

Turn the Lights On!!

Staying healthy anytime includes keeping positive, even during difficult days. Focusing on the positive has rewards that will manifest in your body and the influence you have on others. In the last week, two people I love were diagnosed with cancer. Each received this information just a few days before Christmas. My initial reaction was, “Wow, What a rough way to spend the holidays! Couldn’t the news have come at a better time?”  As I’ve contemplated their circumstances I’ve had a change of heart. If the news was headed their way, this is absolutely the BEST time they could have gotten bad news!

With less than seven days ‘til Christmas, every store, radio station and front yard is announcing the good news that “Unto us a child is born…”

Mary and Joseph, unable to find a comfortable place to stay were forced to spend the night in a barn. The animals became smelly space heaters and the food trough a crib for their newborn. Rather than a well-lit and sterile environment like the delivery rooms where I gave birth to our children, Jesus entered our world via a dark and dirty environment. Absolutely the BEST place for the Light of the World to show up. That dark and dank barn was a perfect canvas for His light.  The black of night made the star easy to follow and because He was the only newborn in the barn, it wasn’t hard for the shepherds to locate the baby who was the “Light of the World. “

If this holiday season includes loss or sadness for you, look at the darkness with a new set of eyes.

  • Look around. Every decoration, tree and bit of tinsel is celebrating the birth of Jesus, Light of the World.
  • His light contrasts your darkness and that a GOOD thing. It makes  Him easy to find.
  • He is the Word of God and therefore, “A lamp unto my feet.” He will illuminate your path and lead you to peace in your circumstances.
  • When you surrender your darkness to God, He will equip you to share His light with others who need it.

Life’s speed bumps and collisions form who we are. We can be left with tire tracks on our back, run over by life or let God leave a distinct Fingerprint on our heart. Yielding prepares us to love and empathize with others.

"You Have Cancer"

"I can't believe it". "This is not happening to me". These are the words that were swimming through my head several years ago as my doctor delivered that dreaded phrase! I remember asking the doctor to bring my sister, Cissy, in the room and after sitting there for a few minutes we just agreed that we would face this head on. Full of fear and uncertainty, we began to make decisions and change our plans.

I am not very demonstrative with my emotions, therefore, no tears were shed when my doctor told me I had cancer. As I sat back in my seat, it felt like my blood became cold and was slowly and painfully draining from my body.  I was stunned.  And, I was angry.  My mother had just transitioned to heaven a few years earlier,  my family was still working through the devastation of our loss and now this! The prevailing thought racing through my mind, like a freight train that slipped off the tracks, was the notion that I would miss the opportunity to have children. "I am not going to have kids." Isn't this every girls dream? I was not married and would not have the chance to bear children.  I was overwhelmed and disheartened.

As I write this post, I am met with the same emotion I experienced when I first heard the news. I am, however, still alive and while I will never have the opportunity to 'have' children, I 'have' children.  I call them my God-kids.  My life has been enriched by several individuals that think of me as another mother.

Through my experience I have learned a few things:

  1. You only live once. Life is a gift, a free gift that will cost you everything you have. :)  My challenge to you: Live with audacious tenacity.  Enjoy those around you. Live with passion and purpose. Love without reserve. Forgive as you have been forgiven.
  2. We are not alone. We are designed to exist within the realm of relationship with others.  I found that I had (and still have) a number of friends and family members who were willing to stand with me in prayer, cook meals, sit and talk, or remain quiet or drive me to doctor's appointments if i needed or wanted them to.
  3. Life is not easy.  There is no way to know what one will face in life.  This is why I choose to stay connected to a Source that is much bigger that I.  Being a Christian, I trust God will give me grace to endure the challenges and victories that come my way.  I choose to believe He will take care of me through the storm. Even when it doesn't seem like it (there are times).
  4. Whether I live or die, I win.  This was a tough one for me.  I had to personally work through this reality on my own.  You see, I believe that the life I live, right now, is temporary. Death is a transition from this 'life' to eternity. I will see my mother and others who have passed on.  I will live forever.

If you, or a loved, have been diagnosed with cancer or any other disease, my sincere hope is that you have a community of people to surround you with loving care and commitment, as I have.

Follow your "Fitness Sense" and be Consistent with Your Exercise

Have you ever wondered why you can lose your motivation or have trouble consistently exercising? I see so many women get excited when they begin a new program, yet quickly give up when it becomes a struggle to make it work with everything else in their life.

If that has happened to you, it could be that you are not following your own fitness sense. Does this sound odd?  Think of this way.  If you like fashion or dressing in the latest styles, you may look to see what is hot and trendy each season, but no matter the trend, you want to be comfortable with who are and follow your own fashion sense. Fashion experts will tell you to look at the latest styles and trends, but use your own creativity to develop your own style and stay true to who you are as a woman.

To stay consistent and get the results you want in your body and fitness, there are certain “guidelines” to follow just as there are trends in fashion, but you have to find what works for you.

Right after I turned 30, I decided I was going to become a really strong swimmer, actually just a swimmer, not necessarily strong. Next year I will turn 40 and it has yet to happen. Spending the time I would need to be a strong swimmer does not make sense for me at this time in my life.  I know I would see amazing benefits, but I just don’t have the time or desire to make it work right now. Instead to be consistent with my exercise, I had to sit down and evaluate the time I did have and develop a plan to make that time count to achieve my desired results.

I see so many women struggling to follow the latest fitness trends or do what someone else is doing to look a certain way. Yet, wonder why they are not motivated and have no discipline to stick with it. It may be that it simply does not make sense for their lifestyle.  If you find that you are getting stuck, see if this helps.

  • Choose Something That You Like to Do

Who cares if your girlfriends are getting up at 5 each morning to run 3 miles?  If you are a night person and hate running, you may see results for a short time,    but eventually quit because it does not make sense for you.

  • Develop a program according to your goals and daily schedule

Before kids, I worked out 1.5 hours 6 days a week.  If I thought I had to follow that same schedule now, exercise would never happen and I would feel like a failure. I’m thankful when I get four days a week and have learned to get the results I want in 30-45 minutes. I had to accept that what worked at that particular time in my life does not make sense right now.

My sister Heather who is my personal fashion consultant, teaches me to design my wardroom by looking at the latest trends, but not to spend my entire budget on things that will only be a trend for a short season.  I need to spend my time and money on classic pieces that will carry me for a long time.  To look and feel my best, I have to blend the latest trends with what makes me feel comfortable and reflect who I am.

We have to do the same when designing an exercise plan.  Changing things up is good to get past a plateau and renew our motivation; but to be consistent, we have to find what we are comfortable with and make it work for our lifestyle.

If you have struggled to actually find a plan that works for you, I can help. With my

Clear Design package, I work one-on-one with women to give them a personalized fitness and food design for their own unique lifestyle.  I want to offer you, as a follower of Created Woman, a free telephone consultation to receive a fitness and food design for your busy lifestyle.

Texting to feel, Praying to heal

"If you play with fire, you're going to get burned." How many times have we heard this saying? It isn't until we're left with a fresh wound and later an unsightly scar, that we realize, "Whoever said that was right".   "Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak."                                                                                            Matthew 26:41 Ladies, lets keep it real. Singleness, however fun, can seem lonely without the warmth of a mans  touch and embrace. So when the Lord tells you, "It's not that time yet," it's frustrating to  look at yourself everyday and wonder, "I'm young, intelligent, beautiful and successful, so why don't I have someone?"   I recently went out with a group of friends and found myself bombarded by couple is love....better yet, couples in lust. I heard the enemy saying, "You'll never have that. Who would want to love you?" And with that, I began me descend. Ugh, the late night text, or the "booty call" as it's more commonly known. I reached out to an old flame I thought would come to my rescue and feed my insecurities with meaningless touch. As if that wasn't bad enough, I was rejected. He told me he was in a "committed relationship", but would love to see me the next day for coffee just to catch up. My ego was bruised, my body left cold and my soul distraught over how I had strayed so far. I thought I left that stuff behind when I gave myself to Christ, but the flesh IS weak.   Apparently, I didn't feel bad enough because I was still contemplating taking the "sloppy seconds" and having coffee with the guy. That was until I told the story to a friend who told me, "Cancel it!" She was holding my feet to the fire and made me realize, I was merely being tempted by the enemy. The truth is, to God, I'm always first pick . I'm loved both emotionally and physically by Him and unlike any other man, He WILL be faithful.   So, I axed the meet-up and slammed the door in the enemy's face saying, "I'm the Kings daughter and not just any man will do. I'll wait on the Lord to provide  the perfect son for his perfect daughter.     Heavenly father, Help me to wait patiently on your perfect will and lead me away from temptation. Help me remember that I AM lacking nothing, so long as I am filled and satisfied with your love. Thank you for teaching me and my future mate (whomever he is) what a real husband. More than that, thank you for choosing me to be yours first. I AM your bride!     "As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his foolishness."                                           Proverbs 26:11 "He remembered us in our weakness. His faithful love endures forever."                                           Psalm 136:23

Maximize Your Fitness

We all know that exercise is important to overall health and wellbeing, no doubt.  We know this.  Trying to fit it into our daily lives is a whole other story. Life is busy. Life is full. There are so many things that need to get done in a day. Whether you are a dedicated work out stud machine or a couch potato, the following information will help you be the most efficient and effective in starting a work out program or tweaking the one you have to ensure you get the most out of the time you put in. It all comes down to timing. The latest research shows that the beneficial effect of exercise lasts between 48 and 72 hours, including the positive effects on insulin, glucagon, and cortisol. So, you need to space your workouts accordingly. If you work out only twice a week, then put 72 hours in between, and work out Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/ Friday. The best way to get the continual benefit in your body is to work out at least 3 times per week, spacing it out like Monday, Wednesday Friday. If you work out more than 3 times per week, then alternate and do cardio every 48 hours, and then add resistance training on the other days.

Why is this so good? Working out helps every system to function more efficiently: our vascular system (heart and blood), brain and nervous system, joints and muscles, as well as our hormones and neurotransmitters. The latest research has shown the impact of exercise on insulin receptors. It makes them more sensitive, or receptive. You want that. I want that. Because when the receptors become resistant Type 2 Diabetes has either arrived, or is right around the corner.

For those who are in a rut and not working out, even just adding a brisk walk for 10 minutes per day has show to have positive benefits. Then just be sure to do that every Monday Thursday and you will have done wonders for your body. Then you can slowly increase it to 20 minutes, then 30 minutes on Monday Thursday, and just see how good you feel.

If you are having a hard time getting started, visit my website www.drsheffield@me.com and send me a message with your contact information and I will send you information that will help you be accountable and get you moving in the right direction. If you have any pain with walking, contact your doctor to have it figured out.
