What’s Hot: Religious and Ethical Topics

It is election year 2012 --- time once again for voters to march to the polls to elect the next President of the United States.  From George Washington, our first President, to the current President, there have always been, shall we say, hot topics that become issues for voters to consider as they start to cast their vote on the ballet. The deciding factor of which candidate to vote for often centers around the voters’ religious and ethical views, thus paving the way for the century old argument: Religion vs. Politics.

With that thought in mind, the hot religious and ethical topics in today’s political debates making headlines are:

  1. Equal rights for same-sex marriage
  2. Abortion access including methods of reducing the abortion rate
  3. Contraception (provided by employer health care plans and/or birth control measures dictated by religious convictions)

My point in writing about these hot topics that voters are facing in this up-coming election is not to voice my opinion one way or the other on any of these issues.  I firmly believe in freedom of choice and free will.

My main point is this:

Religious freedom is one of the most cherished rights in our country.  Our Founding Fathers established our nation while envisioning that religious liberties would be celebrated and faith openly expressed.  Yet efforts to safeguard our First Amendment rights are opposed and ridiculed by activists determined to force people of faith to succumb to pressure and vote against their religious belief.

A former pastor of mine once said:  “A person who doesn’t know and stand for what he believes, will fall for anything.”

Block It Out - Hot Trend

Color! It's everywhere this fashion season. But it's being used in a more un-common way than before. The new trend is "color-blocking".The concept couldn't be easier to comprehend: wearing articles of clothing in chunks, or "blocks" of color.

The idea is to piece together vibrant colors you normally wouldn't think "match".

This can range from a casual capri, to a tailored skirt, or just a fun and funky bag.

I've also noticed, I've spent less on purchasing clothes because I can mix-and-match pieces more so than before. You can go weeks without having a repeat affair.

And saving money always makes a girl happy

Be bold! Throw caution to the wind and trying pairing a few things together. There's really no way you can go wrong.

1.) I love a polished pencil skirt at the office and yet there's still room for a little jazz.  A V-Neck sweater follows the same tailored effect, but the blocks of color come in way of green and lilac and small hints of red and gold in a belt and necklace.

2.) Neon's like this yellow are a must! The richness of the blue on bottom, heighten the concept while still keeping a classic look. It's been paired with a red purse and longer necklace with hughes of orange. (Hint: Necklaces should hit either above the breast line or below, but never on. This keeps "the girls" from becoming a main focus)

3.) Going for a more casual look? Try your color in a skinny capri. Here, it's paired with a less vibrant blue and then a burst of yellow in the belt and necklace off-set the combo.

Hot & Cool After School Snack: Fluffy Popcorn & Smoothie

Hot extra buttery microwave popcorn used to be one of my favorite snacks, but after reading several articles about how bad it was for you I switched to air popped corn.  The best part is that I've come up with a way to satisfy all 3 sets of taste buds in my house.  Salty for Ava, sweet for me and spicy for Eric.  I pair Ava's with her favorite Strawberry Mango Smoothie and it's enough to hold everyone over until I've cooked dinner.

Fluffy Popcorn: Salty, Sweet & Spicy

INGREDIENTS:  1/2 cup popcorn kernels, 4 tablespoons melted butter, 3/4 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoons sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/4 teaspoon rosemary, 1/4 teaspoon white cheddar popcorn seasoning, 1 big bowl for popping and 3 smaller bowls for serving

Begin by popping 1/2 cup of popcorn into a large bowl.  While this is happening melt 4 tablespoons of butter.  Once the popcorn is finished popping, thoroughly coat it with the melted butter.  I recommend using a large flat wooden spoon to turn the popcorn so you don't get your fingers dirty.

Separate the popcorn into your 3 serving bowls, about 4 cups per bowl.  Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon salt evenly over the popcorn in each bowl and turn to coat.  SALTY is done, set it aside.

The second bowl is going to be SWEET.  Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon.  Turn with your wooden spoon to coat thoroughly.  Set aside.

Rinse and dry your spoon and we'll finish up the last bowl, SPICY!  Add 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/4 teaspoon rosemary and 1/4 teaspoon white cheddar popcorn seasoning.  Turn with your wooden spoon to coat thoroughly.

The sweet and spicy look similar so I recommend using colored bowls so little ones don't get confused.  You're almost ready to serve.

Strawberry Mango Smoothie

INGREDIENTS:  1/2 cup unsweetened frozen strawberries, 1/2 unsweetened frozen mangos, 4 oz. yogurt (2 tubes), 3/4 cup apple juice

Measure strawberries, mangos, yogurt & apple juice into your blending device.  I love my magic bullet.  Be sure not to overfill the cup.

Blend until smooth and now you're ready to serve.

Snack time!  Use a ziploc bag or tupperware to store uneaten popcorn for tomorrow.

What's Hot Poolside: Summer Swim 2012

Summer time can come with an excitement and dread at the same time; after all, it does mean it's swimsuit season!  But don't you worry, long are the days when the only option is the itsy, bitsy, teenie, weenie, yellow polka dot bikini!  Swim itself has become a fashion statement and there's a style for every girl!  Plus, don't forget about the fun accessories that come with the season, too.  I don't leave the house without my favorite aviators and am constantly adorned with my comfortable flip flops.  Summer time screams pedicure with a girlfriend! So as you pack your bag to head to the the water this summer, here's What's Hot poolside.

High Waisted

Thanks so the staying power of Mad Men on HBO, the pin-up girl-like bathing suit has made it's return.  The great thing about high waisted is that it hides a multitudes of sins while still making you feel and look young.

Not a bikini yet not a one piece, cut out suits hit the runway in almost every show.  The fun styles are functional and fashionable.

No matter what style you choose, this sun-kiss color screams summer and is the hottest color you'll see poolside.

No matter where you go, summer is summer; kids are laughing playing in the streets, families are vacationing, sundresses sashay across the streets and mall windows beam with color.  It’s a season where you can actually hear the snores of your neighbor as they spend a lazy day in the backyard catching some rays or enjoying the shade while listening to the summer anthem of all time ‘Summertime.”

Hot - Cold - Lukewarm

Where does your mind immediately take you when you hear the words hot, cold, or lukewarm?  No doubt, five people would have five different answers.  So that we are all on the same page as we think about these three words, may I suggest that we use them as a means of examining our relationship with God. Come with me to The Church at Laodicea where God had sent the Apostle John to address the Christians.  I know you well - -you are neither hot nor cold; I wish you were one or the other!  But since you are merely lukewarm, I will spit (spew) you out of my mouth!” [Rev. 3:15-16]

Whoa—back up!  Let me read that again!  “I wish you were hot or cold, but if you are lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth.” I don’t know about you, but that word lukewarm grabbed my attention.  Why, that’s the same thing I do to a mouth full of lukewarm coffee!  It is so disgusting to me that I immediately spit it out of my mouth!  Would God really do that to me if I were a lukewarm Christian?

Questions buzzed around in my brain.  What precisely does lukewarm mean?  A quick Goggle search yielded this definition as it pertained to a person’s attitude or action:  UNENTHUSIASTIC.

My next buzz questions was:  What caused The Church of Lacodicea to become unenthusiastic that produced a lukewarm attitude in regards to their relationship with God?  I believe we find the answer in verse 17:  “You say, “I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.”

You see, the city of Laodicea was affluent, rich, and prosperous.  It was known for 3 main things:  wealth, black-wool textile industry, and housed a world-renowned medical school which discovered a miracle eye-salve.  The city was so rich that it needed no financial assistance from Rome in rebuilding after a major earthquake.  So, we have Christians living in the richest commercial center of the ancient world, which, no doubt, yielded them much personal wealth.

Next buzz question:  Is Jesus scolding them for being wealthy?  I don’t think so.

It was then that I had my  “Aha moment.” Could it be that The Church of Laodicea had become so secure and self-reliant in their natural habitat and had no need of anything, that the same self-reliant attitude had spilled over into their spiritual life and their relationship with God?

It took me back to my early years of being a Christian where I was totally dependent upon God to supply every piece of clothing I wore, food for my family, and His guidance to solve all my problems. I jumped out of bed in the early mornings hours to talk with the King of Kings before rushing off to work.  Oh yeah, the two of us were engrossed in a very intimate relationship with one another and I relied totally upon Him for everything.

Had I now developed an attitude that seemed to be apparent in The Laodicean Christians?  “You are no longer hot and enthused in your pursuit of me; you are not excited and on fire about the faith.”   “You are not cold either, because you have not left the faith, you still go to church, call me your Savior, but---------

I didn’t like the sound of where this nudge might be leading, so I went quickly into my prayer closet to do some soul searching.

How about you?  Have you become self-reliant and handling things all by yourself lately?

Good news!!   We are God’s children; He really does not want to spit us out of his mouth.  So, He has provided a way out of being lukewarm.“ For whom the Lord loves, I rebuke and chasten.” “Be zealous therefore and repent.” (vs 19)

“I already feel my spiritual temperature warming up.”

Hot Intensity

Interval training is “hot” in fitness, especially for us ladies who are busy and struggle to find the time to work out.  Quitting and giving up on any type of exercise can seem like the answer when time is the challenge. To add to the challenge is the task of figuring out what type of workout should do for your personal desires and goals.

For weight loss and weight management, the bottom line is balancing the number of calories you expend and the number of calories you consume. For losing weight, it matters little whether the calories burned during exercise come from fat or carbohydrates.  You must burn calories.

Interval Training is a way to make the most of your workouts and burn the most calories.

This great way to workout breaks up the time with periods of rest and is for the exerciser who is short on time and ready to increase her workout intensity. Not only does interval training allow you to improve your fitness quickly, it is effective for burning lots of calories.

Try one of these workouts each week:

For the Advanced:

  • 3 minutes at 95%–100% maximum (max) heart rate (HR) with

2 minutes at 70% heart rate; repeat 5-6 times

Total Time: 25-30 minutes

For the Intermediate:

  • 30 seconds fast with

1 minute at 70% heart rate; repeat 8-12 times

Total time: 18 minutes

Interval workouts should include a warm-up and a cool-down; is best with a watch with a heart rate monitor; and a consultation with your doctor if you are new to exercise.

If you are not ready for that intensity, go for a long(45 min-1hr)  walk/runs with intervals of light jogging or bike ride with intervals of higher resistance and speed increasing your work load or time by 10% a week.

Getting a program that fits your lifestyle will definitely increase your motivation. Are you discouraged and frustrated trying to figure out an eating and exercise plan for your schedule and fitness goals?

What's Hot About Caring for Orphans

10 hot, invigorating ways you can change your life by changing the life of an orphan or adoptive family: 1. Spend time with a  foster kid. You may be the first individual in their lifetime that is reliable.

2. Share your academic expertise. Are you a scientist, IT specialist, occupational therapist? Share with an orphan, step by step, how you got there.

3. Take the birth child of a new adoptive family to a movie, out to eat or shopping. If their family recently adopted, their world has been shaken and you can help the whole family in a big way just by letting them know that it will all be ok.

4. Buy school backpacks for a family that grew from four to seven because they adopted three siblings.

5. Take care of the kids once a month on a designated night for one year so the adoptive or fostering Mom and Dad can have time together.

6. Tell an adoptive/foster mom who is going through tough times that she is doing a great job.

7. Offer to help a family pay for a few months of counseling for a kid who has a broken past and wounded heart.

8. Sponsor an orphan in another country for $25-$30 per month.

9. Share your vacation home with an adoptive family by offering a free week stay.

10. Take an orphaned sibling group out to buy new sneakers for school. Kids like to have shiny new things, especially for school.

So where might you find adoptive families, orphans and foster kids? Call your local social service department, local churches, or ask neighbors and friends who they know that could use your help.

Many of these ideas were developed from our own family needs, what I have learned about poverty (which is where most orphans come from), and the needs I see in the families around us who adopt older sibling groups.

Be extravagant with what you have to offer. It's hot.

"What's Hot about being Single anyway?

The conversation went something like this;  Me: “So you just graduated from college, congratulations!  What are going to do now?” Girl: “I’m going to Europe to work at a resort for a year.”  Me: “Wow, that’s great!  I wish I had done something like that when I was still single and could.  No worries at all, just get up and go!”  Girl: “Yeah, it’s going to be great!” Oh to be single, carefree and no ties!  That’s the life!  Single ladies, don’t humdrum around about being single thinking, “Where’s my man?”  This is one of the best times of your life if you just embrace it.  The young lady I talked to about going to Europe got it; she received her education to plan for her future but before she settled into the routine of life, she is embracing the freedom she has taking the adventure of a lifetime.

Whether it’s Europe, a trip to the beach, taking risk you’ve been afraid of taking or moving to another city for a job; the possibilities are almost endless when you are hot and single!  And just so you know, age does not appply nor does the fact you may have recently found yourself single again.  If you are single, you are hot and single!  Here are a few more hot ideas to try out while you are single.

  • Interview for a job in the city of your dreams.  It could be your dream job or just a job that pays so you can live in a city that you always wanted to visit.
  • Grab some girlfriends and take weekend getaway to a spa or anywhere else you want to go.  Don’t wait for the phone to ring to get invited; you do the inviting!  Road trips with friends are great memories.
  • Take a week off from work for a “stay-cation,” a week at home doing all the fun stuff in your city.  Hiking, biking, visiting the hot spot restaurants, dance clubs, whatever you think is cool.   Take a look back at Stacy’s blog, “Havin’ Fun in the Summer Time” to get your wheels turning even more.
  • Girl-friend time - Chick-flicks, poolside with snacks and drinks, mani-pedi, shopping….the list is endless.
  • Something I wish I did more often, go visit a friend who has moved away and spend a weekend with them laughing about old times and making some new great memories.  No need to wait on someone else to take a trip, plan your own!
  • Speed dating…I said it!  If I were single, I would hit the speed dating where you get a 5-minute date with several different guys and your done.  No computer trying to figure out the best match taking all kind of personal information, just 5 minutes of FACE-TO-FACE time….something that’s missed in our electronic world.  It’s fun, fast and safe because your not giving out any personal information, just talking in a safe environment where you actually SEE whom you are talking to.  What a novel idea! Plus, no cheesy pick-up lines!

It’s a risk to enjoy life while you are still single, are you up for it?  I think you are and I believe in you.  Be wise in the process though; don’t blow through your savings or milk off your parents or friends.  Be smart in the process because you never know who your going to meet along the way and you don’t want to be a financial burden to your future husband.  But be brave and go out and enjoy life now, while you are single!
