Embrace Each Season of Your Life

Fall is in the air, and a new season has begun.  Here in Southeast Texas where I live, we are elated that we have survived the heat, humidity, mosquitoes, and love bugs that accompany the long days of summer.  I passed a perfect stranger going into the grocery store the other day who paused to say:  “Isn’t this weather great!  I’m so glad summer is over!” The stranger’s statement made me think of our journey through life.  Just as Mother Nature takes us through different seasons with each one having its own distinct features,  so does life.

Take a stroll with me as I share the road I have traveled through different seasons of my life.  Perhaps you can relate.

  1. Sweet 16:  My first memory of anxiously waiting for a specific season to arrive - -a time for drivers license, and the awesome privilege of driving around town on Friday night.
  2. Twenty One:  College graduation, marriage, along with laundry, cooking, working 9-5, and attempts to hold onto the dating life we once enjoyed.
  3. Twenty seven:  The beginning of babies and diapers, which led into school, homework, carpools, ballgames, spend-the night-parties, fun times, crying times, proms, dating, college, weddings.  Whew!
  4. Grandchildren:  A time to relax and play, and not have to pay the bills.
  5. Aging Parent:  Sandwiched in between children, grandchildren, and aging parents, I now have the choice of pushing a baby stroller or a walker at any given time of the day.

Yes, I have reached the age where I have passed through many seasons along my  journey of life.  Many of those seasons were filled with much joy.  However, there have been many seasons throughout my journey that were filled with heartaches, which tested my faith.  Those are the ones I wanted over and done with just as quickly as I wanted the long summer days of heat, humidity, mosquitoes, and love bugs to end.

But, as I reflect back on my journey, if there is one thing that I have learned, it is this:

Embrace each season that life finds you in and know that God works all things for good.  It is within each season that we learn and grow or remain stuck, complaining about the pests that have invaded our life.

It is our choice which road we take

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”  [Ecclesiastes 3:1]

Hearty Pumpkin Pancakes

Fall and winter are the perfect time to incorporate pumpkin into your menu. Our family appreciates the versatility of this fruit ( seen by most as a vegetable) as evidenced by Pumpkin Cake which has replaced pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and Pumpkin Fluff , a low fat and low sugar appetizer served with apples and graham crackers is  recommended  and prepared by our daughter, the registered dietician. Our newest addition to the pumpkin-fest is the pumpkin pancake.  I took a delicious recipe made with white flour and tweaked and tweaked until I came up with this whole wheat version ( I'm always on a quest for healthy and yummy). This recipe makes about 8-10, 4 inch pancakes.

In one bowl mix the following:

1 1/4 c whole wheat flour

1 t pumpkin pie spice

1/2 t salt

2 t baking powder

2T sugar ( or Splenda if you cut sugar whenever you can)

In a separate bowl, mix the following:

1 +1T milk

1 egg

1 t vanilla

2 T melted butter

7 T pumpkin

Fold liquid into bowl with dry ingredients. Using a 1/3c, pour onto a hot griddle. Flip, when top side appears somewhat dry. These pancakes are nice and dense. They stick to your ribs and hold you for several hours.

My family  loves these  because they taste good but I  love pancakes because they they're like fingerprints, no two are alike. Each one swirls just a little differently from the one sizzling just beside it.

You're fingerprint is your mark of uniqueness. No one else looks like you, laughs like you or has a birthmark in the same place as you. Your hips or the texture of your hair may not be exactly to your specifications but you can be certain that there are things about you that others admire. Are you the organizer that  scattered women can't survive without or  the one with witty sarcasm that keeps the office in stitches?

I hope the next time you cook up a pancake, you'll check out how special each one is, then think about yourself and remind yourself that your swirls are practically perfect!

Fall Hairstyles

Fall is here and so are my favorite new hair trends

Warm it up Just adding a warm tone to blonds brings a fresh new look after the summer. Likewise the ombre style color of darker roots fading to a lighter end is a trendy way to darken your summer look for a warmer fall feel.

Go Red Its back in a big way. Beautiful copper reds and warm caramel red tones. Don't be afraid to go a little bolder.

Texture No more flat irons needed. Beautiful bounce and beachy waves. Its not your granny's perm movement is key.

Braids For a day with the kids or date night braids work. Try them on any texture or length.

Fishtail braids are a beautiful fresh look.

Whatever style you choose to embrace for fall be true to you. Healthy hair is beautiful hair

Fall Fashion Report 2011

I live in Austin, Texas and it has gone on record that this has been the hottest summer since 1925 topping over 70 days in triple digits.  So needless to say, I am ready for the cool air of the fall!  The crisp breeze is always a welcome reminder to bundle up in one of my favorite coats while sipping piping, hot Chi Tea Latte from Starbucks.....mmmmm......I can taste it now.  Is it fall yet?  Good news ladies, in the stores it is fall and oh, how wonderful the clothes are!

Want more good new?  Your closet that's full of 2010 trends can still find life in 2011.  The names of the looks have changed a bit and maybe the styles have been a little tweaked - 2010 Men's Wear vs. 2011 Androgyny - but nonetheless, something old is something new this year!  So if you went crazy for the whole Mad Men craze last year you can still pull out those pumps and leopard prints and hit the town.

So, without further ado, let's Fall into Fashion Together!

2011 Looks:

2011 Mod trend is really 2010's Mad Men look.  It's the sexiness of the 60's that can only come from classic sophistication.  The look is so hot that even the fall TV line has picked up on the trend featuring shows like Pam Am about the famous flight attendance that were popular in the 60's.  So just watch, take notes and go shopping!

 The Romantic

With flowy, soft dresses and skirts, this elegant ease is reminiscent of last year's bohemian.  Stylist Rachel Zoe is one of the many style icons that flaunts this look the best.  Comfy, beautiful and romantic all in one!

The Romantic trend can be created by long flowy skirts as well as  midi skirts as seen in the Mod look or long maxi skirts.  Put on a t-shirt and make it a casual, romantic day.

The Androgyny

For the girl who likes to stay on trend but doesn't want all the frills!  It's last year's Men's Wear look and it's hear to stay for another season.  Grab your man's tie, put on your favorite blazer and hit the door!

2011 Trends:

Plaid has exploded onto everything from clothes to accessories and it's a flash back to the 1990's movie "Clueless."  So those of you who have had to hide your inner Cher for over a decade, pull her back out again and have a blast!

Saturated Hues

These brights debut in fall 2010 and they haven't lost their luster!   The trend known as Color Blocking are full of brights and find life amidst the falls usual neutral colors.

Prints in saturated hues are also a big hit this year.

Black & White

For those of us that like our classic black,  this year's black and white is the new classic.  The trend is popping up in every look and you can never go wrong with the basics!  Yes, white in a fall color but stick to the rule of no white shoes.

2011 Textures:

We can't have a fashion list without the biggest fashion icon of 2011, Princess Kate!  She sports the lace trend in a classic silhouette that has become her staple look.  Lace is tricky and can look tattered if not worn right.  Take cues from icons like Kate and incorporate it into your Classic or Romantic looks.

Tweed is also a classic and can be worn from scarves, blazers to purses like this classic Chanel purse.

2011 Coats:

Floor Length & Ponchos

As confessed in my blog "Changing with the Seasons" I am a coat-aholic so these fresh take on coats must find their way to my closet!

Chunky Heal

Last year these chunky heals started to peak around the corner and for the fall this more practical heal has found their home in every type of shoe.  This trend will definitely keep you looking fashion forward while keeping your balance!

 Lace Ups

Fresh off the runway, this look has already popped up on the red carpet.  Boots, booties and wedges rock the style in every shade.

The great thing about every new season is that you don't always have to pay top dollar to look like a million bucks!  So many designers have designed amazing lines for the main-stream customer without compromising the quality.  So to stay on trend and on budget this fall, look for Designer collections in the stores you shop and strut the runway in your best fall wadrobe!

Beauty Essentials: your fall make-up bag

I don't know about you but my make-up bag can get a little out of control from time to time! At least every few months I like to clear out the clutter and add in a few "must-haves". There are so many great products out there sometimes it's hard to choose which items are right for you. After researching, trying on, and reading reviews here is my list beauty essentials that may be a great addition to YOUR make-up bag!

  • Moisturizer is a must as we move into the chillier months - La Mer is an incredible face cream (if you can afford it)...if not, Oil of Olay Regenerist and Oil of Olay Age Defying, and the ROC series have received great reviews!

  • Fragrance - Burbberry Brit Limited Edition is a perfect fall choice with citrus, pink pepper, baked apple and plum (pomarose), cinnamon, peony, cedar, sandalwood, amber and tonka bean. Christian Dior Hypnotic Poison is another great choice with notes of jasmine, heliotrope, bitter almond, caraway, tuberose, ylang ylang, orange blossom, green stems and leaves, vanilla orchid, sandalwood and musk.
  • Deep blue/teal/burgandy nail polish is great to include in your bag for any quick touch-ups - stick with OPI for a long-lasting finish.

  • Cream blush is a more favorable choice to powder during the fall/winter when skin tends to be dryer - Smashbox Skin Tint is an amazing product!!
  • Lilac Purple and Metallic eye shadows can brighten up your face while not overdoing it  - MAC Seedy Pearl, Plum Dressing, and White Gold are all great fall picks that have a smooth finish.
  • Berry Lipscomplement any skin-tone - try Benefit Full Finish Lipstick in Espionage or Sassy-Frass.

Looks like it's time for a little shopping trip...:)

Creating a vision board

Fall is a great time to explore, learn about, and shape your unique style and a vision board is a great tool to use. To create one simply round up a cork board and fill it with magazine pictures that speak to you. Target has great looking boards that are inexpensive, but really, any old board will do because you’re going to cover it with pictures. As you add pictures don’t think so much about how it all fits together, simply add what you like, and soon you’ll begin to see a pattern emerge. Your board will become as unique as you are, and you can use it to help bring focus to your wardrobe. Are you classy? Add a pantsuit from Chanel. Sassy? Perhaps a pair of Charles David stilettos should be your next purchase. Comfortable? There’s nothing quite so versatile as a great fitting pair of jeans. As I put my own board together the eclectic/romantic/elegant style that I’m drawn to became quickly apparent, and it’s a style I keep going back to. Your board will help you become self-aware and focused about your sense of style. Try it!

Feel of Fall Fashion

Luxurious, thick, woven, soft, tough - fashion's feel this fall is anything but boring.

Our top 3 fall fashion textures kicks off with shearling...

These shearling aviator jackets look great paired with a scarf and skinny jeans or a full skirt and knit tights!

Cozy plaid flannel takes our number two spot:

Layer it with a fitted blazer or rick it solo with leather leggings for a fun look!

And number 1 goes to...fisherman cable knit sweaters!

Dress it up or down this is one of my favorite looks! Belt it like the chloe collection above to keep your "girlish figure" try it with boots or clogs!

Whichever feel you choose this fall make sure you feel fabulous!

Fall Fashion Report, 2010

You can feel it in the air, see it in the trees and as you walk down the aisle in every home, clothing and trinket store. Fall is here and so are the glorious fall fashions!  I have to admit that even though I love the summer and all the fun activities we get to do like swimming, walk in the park with our kids or take a much needed summer vacation, fall is definitely my favorite time of the year.  I love the smell of pumpkin and spice filling the air of my living room when the candles are lit.  The sweet aroma of a cake baking, while snuggling up to the fireplace.  And I love putting on my favorite fall coat, tall boots and scarf as I step out into the brisk air.  The feel of a fall day blowing against my face as I pull my coat tighter sipping my favorite Starbucks is always considered a perfect day in my book! Every September seems to brings changes.  School is in full swing, new agendas usually roll out at work and of course, our favorite fashion magazines publish their own version of “The Book” that holds every secret, trend, accessory, boot, shoe, bag and new coat we need for the season.  But really, who has time to read 400 pages of fall fashions?  I wish I could study every page memorizing each picture so when it was actually my time to shop, I knew exactly what I needed!   Well, no need to worry ladies.  Created Woman is here to rescue you.  We’ll show you all the hot new trends, what’s in or out, which pieces are timeless all that you need to fill all your fall fantasies in less than 400 pages!

This year’s styles are ones that have impacted the world of fashion before.  Almost every trend this year our mothers or grandmothers have worn before.  It's a season of timeless elegance!

Timeless pieces like the ones above once again walked the runway for fall 2010.

Katherine Hepburn wearing black leggings and round toe flats. circa 1950's

Catherine Denevue looking lucious in a leopard print jacket 1965

Marilyn Monroe is a soft, full skirt circa 1950's

Lets FALL into together!

* Mixing Prints - Be careful that you look like you are deliberately clashing and pulled together so that you don't conjure up images of a "bag lady."

Leggings and Thigh High Socks

MC Hammer Pants

Yes, they are back!

The Minimalist

Wear in neutral colors

Leopard Print
The fun print is a staple that has once again re-surfaced.  From Raquel Welch to Catherine Denevue (see above), a hit of leopard brings out the wild girl in all of us!

-Clogs -Ankle Boots -Round Toe Ballet Flats

We first saw clogs in the 70's.  Now, they have a little different twist.  See Yvonne's article on Clogs, Fashion and Function

Ankle Boots - They come in all different looks.  Some are peep toe, others have fur so find what's best for you.

Ballet Flats - This year, try a round toe with leggings or a long, full skirt.

You can't go wrong with boots this year! So many different styles to choose from.

Top Handle  - Louis Vuitton

Hobo - Ralph Lauren

Yummy Colors!

The Neutrals

The neutral trend started last spring and continues for the fall.  It's your base for every great outfit this year.

Jewel tones

Jewel tones are hot in everything from shoes to accessories!  It's the pop of color that gets you noticed!

Jewel tones for fun; grey's , whites and black for the office

This fall, we travel back to the basic to a time of classic sophistication.  Shop the classics and you'll never go out of style!

There's nothing that screams timeless like Vogues very own Anna Wintour!  Her classic black glasses, fashion and hair cut as seen every season on the front row of every runway show will never go out of style.

Trench & Pencil Skirt

Two of my favorites!  Burberry made the trench coat a classic in the 1850's and if you don't have some version of this classic, make sure you pick one up this year. For a classic, sexy look, the pencil skirt can carry your from work to play.

The Men's Wear Look
Diane Keaton caused an uproar in the 1977 movie "Annie Hall" with her quirky men's apparel style  making women run to the department stores in droves to duplicate the look.    This time around, the look has incorporated some softer textures while keeping it's masculine-femininity.

1960's Full Skirt and Bustier

Thanks to the 3rd time Emmy Winning show "Man Men," Designers can't get enough of the look.  It hit every runway from Louis Vuitoon to Marc Jacobs.  Gwyneth Paltrow best sported the timeless 1960's lady like style on the red carpet this year in Prada.  Even hair trends from the 60's have re-surfaced by adding fullness to the crown.

For more classic tips, see blog on Clothes the fit the Economy and Trend

The Perfect Fall Outfits

So as the crisp breeze begins to blow through the air, make sure you are ready with great an american classic like the trench coat,a  great pair of boots and a leopard accessory .  But beware!  The collections for fall 2010 are ones you want to keep around for the next generation of fashionistas!  They are here to stay once again!

Remember, Friday, September 10th is Fashion Night Out so hit the stores with your best ankle boots and enough cash in your top handle bag to give a boost to the economy and your closet.
