Whose Are You? Believing It & So Much More
Life can be hard sometimes. We all faces challenges daily with goals that seem impossible, financial hardships, and situations that place us so far out of our comfort zone that we want to hide under a rock. And stay there. I’ve once heard this saying: “Some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.” Wow, some days I feel like I’ve been the statue taking bombs from the pigeons above all weeklong! And some days I’m rocking at life. And what I’ve learned with maturity and time, personal development and grace from God is that we can face any hardship that life sends our way with the right mindset. Your mind is a powerful tool that should not be taken for granted.
If you don’t take control over what is happening between your ears, then nothing in life changes for us. Maximize your mind. The attitude of “I can’t,” “But it’s too hard,” “I’ve tried before and failed” or worse, “But I’m afraid” produces mental roadblocks writing fabricated stories and lies. We have to change the story if we want to achieve the life God wills for us. God doesn’t want us to be limited in our belief of what is possible through Him. Philippians 4:13 reads: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Amen and amen! And in Ephesians 3:20 we read about His power that is at work in us: “Now to Him who is able to do infinitely more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.”
Do we really know and walk in the faith that we can do all things because God is in us? We should! What are you trying to change or improve in your life right now? What goals have you set for yourself that have fallen short year after year? Did you make a new year’s resolution in January and now in March have completely given up on it?
The reason we don’t achieve everything in life that God wants for us is because we stop ourselves short. We have limiting beliefs that stop us in our tracks and tell us we can’t do it. Those beliefs aren’t from God – not one single word of it! He already told you, you can do all things through Him.
Begin to identify your limiting beliefs and how you can change them using these four steps.
Step 1 - Identify your limiting beliefs.
What negative thoughts creep into your mind each time you try to take steps forward towards reaching your goal? Is it similar to “I’ve tried before and failed” or “I’m just not good at that” or “I’m not good enough”? Or is it a belief that you’re too young or too old, your intelligence or lack there of, or the perception of others? Write down that thing that pops up in your mind and sabotages your actions. Remember, these are not thoughts from God. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”
Step 2 - Identify daily rituals or habits that may be holding you back.
Will Durant, an author and philosopher, said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Write do you do day in and day out? Is your day filled with good and nurturing things or is your to-do list or underlining habits leading you away from excellence?
One of my favorite speakers and authors, Tony Robbins, says that human beings will always act consistently with who they believe they are. Somewhere along the way, we have accepted our limiting beliefs to be truthful because “that’s just the way I am.” But so often in our lives we have simply adapted to be a certain way so that we don’t fail, so that people will like us or respect us, but it is not necessarily who we are. Many people don’t even know who they are or have accepted a lesser version of themselves.
I wake up each day telling myself “Who I am.” However, more importantly I tell myself each day, “Who’s I am.” “I am Kelsie Keen. I’m a child of the King. I am courageous. I am bold. I am fearless. I can do all things because God says I can through Him. I am a leader. I am a healer. And I look good doing it!” Everytime I feel the push back from the devil chatting untrue lies in my ear hoping to take over my mindset, I tell him, “Who are you talking to? You do not know me!” So now I ask you, who are you?
Step 3 - Write down who you are.
Make it your anthem. Make it empowering. Write it on your bathroom mirror and read it to yourself each morning until it is memorized in your soul. Why do this? Because our strongest force is our need to stay consistent with how we define ourselves. It is not so much about changing your identity but expanding it. Read in the bible about who God says you are.
You are a child of God. (John 1:12 and 1 Peter 1:23)
You are a branch of the true vine, and a conduit of Christ’s life. (John 15:1,5)
You are a friend of Jesus. ( John 15:15)
You are justified and redeemed. (Romans 3:24 and Ephesians 1:7)
You are free. (Galatians 5:1)
You are accepted. (Romans 15:7)
You are a temple of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:19)
You are a work of art. (Ephesians 2:10)
You are blessed. (Ephesians 1:3)
You are bold and confident. (Ephesians 3:12)
You are strong. (Joel 3:10)
You are light in the world. (Ephesians 5:8 and Matthew 5:14)
You are complete. (Colossians 2:10)
You are chosen. (Colossians 3:12)
You are fearless. (Isaiah 54:14)
You are unstoppable. (Philippians 4:13)
You are a conqueror. (Romans 8:37)
You are healed. (Isaiah 53:5 and 1 Peter 2:24)
You are loved. (Romans5:8)
Pastor Steven Furtick wrote a book (I highly recommend it) called “Crash the Chatterbox: Hearing God’s Voice Above All Others.” In that book he describes the “chatterbox” as the drowning negative internal dialogues, much like the limiting beliefs I described above. “Once you’ve made the decision to build your assessment of yourself exclusively on God’s Word, the chatterbox loses its ability to trash-talk you into submission. And the more adept you become at talking smack back to the chatterbox, the more ingrained the reality of who you are will become.”
Step 4 - Cross out that limiting belief that you wrote down in step 1.
Draw a line through it. That is not you! You are a conqueror. You are unstoppable. You are a champion. You now have a new empowering belief (step 3) and this what you will tell yourself each time you feel those limiting beliefs creeping back into your mind. Make a new list of daily routines that are consistent with who you are that will bring you closer to achieving all that God has promised for you. May I suggest that the first thing you put on your list of daily routines be your time with God each morning, reading His word, and listening to His spirit. There is no better way to start each day.
As you venture out into your day today, remember who you are, but most importantly, remember WHO’s you are.
