Three Things I Do to Stay Healthy

I think a lot of woman try to make healthy living harder than it really is by attempting extreme fitness or diet plans. Living a life that is healthy and fit inside and out comes by creating daily habits for a well-balanced life.  I have learned there are three things I must do every day to stay healthy on the inside and out.

1. Start my day with Jesus...well coffee too

I have to be honest.  My priorities have not always been where they needed to be.  There were times that I would wake up and hit the door running, literally, to work out or head straight to work.  Through the years, the Lord has shown me that I cannot honor Him, make good choices with my mind, body and others unless I give him the first part of my day through studying His word and prayer.  It is during that quiet time, I learned more about Him and what He would have me to do with my time and the purpose He has for my life.  Getting healthy requires us to be still at times.

Psalms 46:10

Be still and know that I am God. (NIV)

2. Exercise

Some days I have an hour.  Some days I have 20 minutes.  The goal is to move and do something whether it is a long walk with my husband or kids, a run by myself or with a girlfriend, a quick strength training workout or 10 minutes of stretch or yoga.  I just move. We can't get caught up in the all or nothing mentality of "if it can't be perfect, why bother."  It is consistency that brings a life of healthy habits.  May we take time to honor the Lord with our body as we are instructed to do.

1 Corinthians 6:19

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own. For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.(NIV)

3. Eat Fruit

Two - three servings of fruit is a must each day along with a few vegetables to get in thenutrients the body requires.  For busy days, I choose fruits that can travel and are easy to eat.  Of course, it is not always perfect.  But focusing on what to eat instead of what not to eat, helps with making better food choices that honor God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.(NIV)

I have learned that it can be a challenge to teach my kids today the basics of healthy living by God's standards and not the world's.  But recently, I have made it simple by sharing these three things with my 13-year-old daughter.  We don't talk about weight, calories or appearance, but about making the right choices by seeking God first.  She has embraced the "three". No nagging from me, just the mention of three and she remembers them in that order.  God, exercise and fruit.

My prayer is not to become consumed with being fit by the world standards, but pause and seek more of the Lord as to what He would have us do with our body.  That is being fit on the inside and out.
