The World said Prostitute, but God said Priceless
Labels are everywhere. They can make us or break us. Throughout my 37 years of life I’ve been labeled too skinny and too fat. I’ve been labeled too nice and too mean. What? Which one? Pretty confusing, right!?
Let me be honest. In the past these labels really jacked with my confidence. Like, who am I really? That is exactly why I had to learn to put my trust, my identity, in God and who He says I am – not what the world says about me.
What’s the best way to counteract labels trying to attack your psyche? Cling to God and His word. The truth is, the closer my relationship with God becomes the easier it is for me to leave the labels where they belong – on the tongue of the person who spoke them.
That reminds me of the first lady that I want to meet when I walk through those pearly gates – Rahab. She’s my favorite.
Rahab was fierce, full of faith. Two things I could definitely use a little bit more of.
But fierce and faith-filled are not the two adjectives people usually associate with Rahab – certainly not back then. I would have to guess the majority of people labeled her as used and most likely sleazy. They didn’t see what God saw. They didn’t see a woman who would use her past to grow her future. They didn’t see a woman placed in a specific place for a specific time. They didn’t see her potential.
Rahab wasn’t raised to believe in God; however, God believed in Rahab.
Year after year, day after day, men rotated through her house like a twister through Tornado Alley. Amidst the sin, conversations happened. Conversations about the God of Moses. Conversations about the God of the Israelites. The stories grabbed Rahab’s interest and her heart. After all, how could all of these things unfold without the hand and help of someone much mightier than us? Because of these stories, when Salmon asked Rahab to trust him and the God who would certainly save her – she did just that. Talk about faith! And when the Walls of Jericho came tumbling down, Rahab walked out of her house and never looked back.
“In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?” James 2:25
Rahab ended up being a symbol of everything a sinner is – a sinner saved by God’s grace.
This world is rough, y’all. It’s full of people questioning, wondering, and oftentimes judging.
It’s loud. So loud.
Dear Created Woman, be careful not to let that worldly noise infiltrate your very being - your soul. Don’t let the world’s labels define you.
The world said Rahab was a prostitute. But God – God said she was priceless.
“Therefore there is not condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1
