A Certain Purpose

Keep Your Eyes Focused on the Purpose Giver

Have you ever wondered, “When will my time come?” while scrolling through Instagram and judging all of the successful people? I have! Comparing our lives to filtered photos and precisely laid out captions will always result in the deflating of our God-given dreams.

One of the hardest things God calls us to do is wait patiently to see our purpose bloom. In Psalms 37:7, it says, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways when they carry out their wicked schemes.” David gives us three key actions to do when pursuing our purpose.

1. Be Still - In Hebrew, this phrase means to let go or surrender. God wants us to hold our purpose and all we’ve poured into it with open hands before him. This means giving God full access to change our plans and path and releasing control of our timeline.

2. Wait Patiently for HIM - In other words, don’t make decisions when you feel like God is taking too long. Do what you're supposed to do in this season, grow, and soak in all of the wisdom. You want to be prepared and ready when it’s time to make a move.

3. Do Not Fret - When we trust that God is an active participant in fulfilling our purpose, there’s no need to compare journeys. This allows peace to eradicate the negative voices that say where we “should” be by now.

All three points have one major commonality: keep your eyes on God and your lane. We have to be mindful not to get so focused on fulfilling our purpose that we lose sight of the Purpose Giver. Echoing what the Apostle Paul said in Philippians 1:6, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” Fulfilling our purpose is not up to us. We have been given a co-starring spot in a much bigger, beautiful story!

Reflection

  1. Which key resonated most? Why?

  2. Read Psalm 37. Write down another verse that speaks faith into trusting God with your purpose.

  3. What about waiting on God is most difficult for you?

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;

do not fret when people succeed in their ways,

when they carry out their wicked schemes.” (Psalms 37:7 NIV)
