Brokenhearted in Grief and Healing in Living a Legacy

Jesus is the ultimate healer, and while we do have to put in the work, He will redeem you and make you whole, and fully healed. We were ultimately not made for this world, and we will experience true wholeness once we reach Heaven.

February 28th, 2007 was a day I will never forget, as it was one of the worst days of my life. My Grandaddy passed away after a long-fought battle with epiglottic cancer, and ultimately, the complications from treatment took him from this earth to meet our Heavenly Father. To say I was devastated and broken-hearted was an understatement.

You see, this was not just the day that I lost my grandfather. This was the day that I lost a strong Godly man. He also was my father figure for a good portion of my life following my parent’s divorce when I was five years old. I was extremely close to both of my maternal grandparents; however, I had an especially close relationship with my Grandaddy.

As I sat in the pew at the church at my Grandaddy’s funeral, as a now eighteen-year-old, I was devastated, numb, and unable to process that the man I looked up to for so many years, was now gone. The pastor said a lot of things, but the one thing that really stuck out to me was the scripture that we had chosen for my Grandaddy’s funeral. It was 2 Timothy 4:7-8, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearance.” (2 Timothy 4:7-8 NIV)

It took a long time following that day to even begin the healing process, if I am being honest. However, I did rely on God daily, just to make it through the day, grieving the loss and the future that we would have had together. What God showed me through this grieving and healing process is that one way to heal, is to live the legacy of the person who is gone, and to honor God in doing so.

I have found that living his legacy begins by thinking back on my Grandaddy's life, remembering the sweet memories and what he taught me. How he taught me to always tell people the good things about themselves when I noticed them, to also always be kind to those around us, and to first and foremost, always trust in Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

So now as my Grandaddy is in Heaven wearing his “crown of righteousness,” that he so rightly earned, I strive to continue healing, still missing him daily, and to live his legacy, which is truly living my life devoted to the Savior who has the power to make us whole after a devastating heartbreak. Also, just as my Grandaddy did, I want to live the words of 2 Timothy 4:7-8 to the best of my ability. I long to one day receive my “crown of righteousness” and see my Grandaddy in heaven once again.

  1. Write down areas of your life where you still need healing. Let God speak to you, and write a prayer to him allowing him to heal all of your broken pieces.

  2. Write down the promises God gives us discussed in this devotional. How do you get your mind and heart to believe them in times of heartbreak and healing?

  3. What areas of your life do you need your own healing, and what action(s) are you taking to receive the healing that you need?

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearance.” (2 Timothy 4:7-8 NIV)

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3 NIV)
