It’s Not Easy Being Green

It’s Not Easy Being Green

Envy is a Dream Crusher

Recently I have had the pleasure of supporting some friends as they made their mark on the literary world by becoming published authors. It was an exciting time for each of them and I cheered them on in their accomplishment. I am ashamed to say though, that underneath all that encouragement and excitement was a hidden side of my heart that was filled with envy.

Why were they the ones with a beautiful new book in their hands, while I was still waiting on fulfillment in my own dream of writing? I felt the seeds of my dream dying while I watched others dreams sprout and begin to bloom. I was happy for them, but I wanted my dream too!

When we read about two sisters in Genesis 29 and 30, we see how destructive envy can be in our lives. Rachel was desperate to have children and she couldn’t understand why God blessed her sister, Leah, with many sons while she remained barren. On the other hand, Leah was envious of the deep love that Jacob had for her sister, Rachel.

They both wanted what the other had. Many of their days were spent striving to obtain what they each so desperately wanted, while neglecting to appreciate what they had already been given. This was right where I found myself as I watched other’s dreams fulfilled and wondered, “why not me?” I was focusing on their blessings, while losing sight of my own.

At the end of their story, both Rachel and Leah were remembered and blessed by God, but neither of them waited well for that blessing to come. God has a plan for each of our lives, but we have to learn to wait well on God’s perfect timing for the dreams He has planted within us. When we see others succeeding, it’s ok to feel a bit envious, but it’s not ok to dwell on that envy until it causes disorder in our lives. (James 3:16 NIV)

When I shift my focus from others back to the Lord, He reminds me that my life is not my own. Any dreams or plans that I make are ultimately in His hands. Focusing on this truth brings me back into a right way of thinking about the success of others. It allows me to experience joy while celebrating with those friends who are now published authors.

Instead of being “green with envy”, we will be green with new growth as we take small dream steps and wait for the green light on our own dreams.

Reflection

  1. Have you ever struggled with envious feelings toward someone achieving a goal that you are working toward? If so, how do you overcome those feelings?

  2. Who do you know that is celebrating a recent success? What can you do to encourage and congratulate them on their achievement?

  3. What is one scripture that reminds you to trust in God’s timing for your dreams? Commit that verse to memory this month.

Goals

What are three small dream steps you can take this month to move closer to the big dream God has planted in your heart?

For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. (James 3:16 NIV)

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

(Proverbs 14:30 NIV)

I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course.  (Jeremiah 10:23 NLT)
