Duchess Kate’s Fashion Dilemma
What’s a Queen to Wear?
I recently read an article describing how the life of Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge will change once her husband, Prince William, takes the throne. She will have new perks, including wearing her own crown as the “Queen Consort,” and new expectations of how she is to carry herself in public with her husband, the new king.
That got me to thinking. As a daughter of the King, what are the expectations of how I am to dress and present myself each day? Is my attire, demeanor and attitude one that represents a princess, who is grateful for her salvation and position she has been given?
We read that we are to put on the armor of God each day in Ephesians 6 and clothe ourselves in compassion, kindness, humility and gentleness, and patience in Colossians 3:12, but as I pondered and prayed, the Lord led me to the famous Proverbs 31 woman.
In Proverbs 31:25-26 it says, Strength and dignity are her clothing and she smiles at the future. She opens her mouth in wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
These two verses alone made me pause and ask, what is the first impression I give of my outer clothing? When I step out in public, am I confidently strong in who I am in Christ alone? Am I dressing in a way that is respectful to the Lord and those around me, while taking pride to present myself well? It says she smiles at her future, yet does not state her future. That brings me to a question. Despite what may be my current or known future, do I present myself with a joyful smile in all occasions, as royalty? Do those around me, including friends and family recognize who I am, not because I tell them, but because of the confidence and joy that I wear?
And finally, just like Kate Middleton has been given expectations of how she is to speak as a royal, it is clear, that a daughter of a king should speak with wisdom and kindness when she opens her mouth.
Created Women, when we stand in the mirror for our final check before walking out the door, let’s ask ourselves a few questions. Is what I am wearing honorable to the Lord, and am I taking pride in who I am in Christ? Is my face, filled not only with makeup, but a confidence (or joy) reflecting my position in the royal family as a daughter of a king? If not, let's pause to remember, with gratitude, the gifts and position from our Holy Father before we step out to represent Him well.
